The reinvention of Jaguar is either the most audacious gamble in automotive history or its most visionary act of self-preservation. Possibly both. The Jaguar Type 01 — announced May 13, 2026, with deliveries beginning later this year — is the first car of what Jaguar calls its new era, and it is unlike anything the British brand has produced before. That is, of course, entirely the point.
The name carries meaning. The "0" represents electric propulsion and zero tailpipe emissions. The "1" denotes its status as the first Jaguar of a new era. The Type designation unites the brand's long history of innovation — think the E-Type, the XJ, the XK — with the most advanced technology Jaguar has ever deployed in a production vehicle. It is a car designed by people who understood that the only way forward was to refuse to look backward except as inspiration.
The numbers are extraordinary. A tri-motor electric powertrain produces more than 986 horsepower and 959 lb-ft of torque. The 850-volt electrical architecture supports charging from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes. Jaguar targets a range of over 400 miles. A starting price of approximately $130,000 positions it between the luxury and ultra-luxury segments — deliberately, ambitiously, in the territory occupied by no direct competitor.
The Type 01 is a four-door grand tourer. Its proportions are long-bonnet, fastback-roofline — a shape that recalls the E-Type's essential geometry while expressing it in a vocabulary that is entirely contemporary. The exterior was previewed by the Type 00 concept, revealed at Miami Art Week in December 2024 in Miami Pink and London Blue — colors chosen to represent the two cities that define Jaguar's ambitions in the current cultural moment. The production car refines those ideas into something that can actually be driven.
Prototypes have covered tens of thousands of miles in testing across multiple continents. A red prototype appeared at the 2026 Monaco Formula E Grand Prix, performing demonstration runs between races — an appearance calculated to maximum effect. Those who drove the prototype came away, by most accounts, genuinely impressed. The driving dynamics are said to be emphatically Jaguar — the brand's historic gift for ride and handling translated into an electric medium that, in many ways, suits it better than combustion ever did. Electric torque is perfectly suited to the kind of effortless, confident performance Jaguar has always aspired to deliver.
The car is designed, developed, and built in the UK — a point of pride emphasized in every Jaguar communication about it. In an era when manufacturing is increasingly globalized and provenance claims are often hollow, Jaguar's commitment to British production is genuine and carries weight among the buyers it is courting: people for whom the origin of a luxury object matters as much as the object itself.
Jaguar has taken considerable criticism for the boldness of its reinvention, particularly from those who felt the brand's previous identity was worth preserving unchanged. Those critics are, with respect, missing the point. The previous identity had not been commercially sustainable for years. The Type 01 is not a betrayal — it is a declaration.
