Situated at the base of an imposing mountain range in Grossarl, Austria, is Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort, as if a picture from a postcard, perfectly framed by dramatic peaks and immaculately manicured alpine trees around the exterior. I was excited to find out why this five-star wellness resort was so well regarded by the most discerning travelers. My immediate impression was one of awe. Stepping into the lobby, I was left speechless by the sheer size of the space; wide, open, and airy, with a hint of spruce and pine throughout. Soft ambient lighting, cozy seating in neutral earthy tones, and textured accents provide a warm atmosphere that one would expect of a luxury alpine resort.

Rooms & Suites: Refined Mountain Luxury
I thought the lobby was already impressive, but the Panorama Suite was just as captivating. This two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite featured a separate seating area, floor-to-ceiling windows with a large terrace overlooking the picturesque village and beautiful snowcapped mountains of the region.
There has been great attention given to the details of this suite, as is obvious in the bathrooms, where integrated technology is used to enhance the guest experience. Most features can be controlled by the switch of a button, such as the heated stone floors, the under-cabinet lighting, and the radio. Dark tempered glass, deep soaking tubs, high-quality fixtures, and towel warmers provide ultimate relaxation in a cozy and fully functional setting.
The resort’s 225 rooms and suites offer an elevated alpine experience designed to embody its surroundings. Natural materials like wool, untreated woods, and stone add warmth to create a cocoon of comfort. These make the space feel peaceful and centered, which carries throughout the property.

Elevated Mountain Cuisine
With the variety of amazing dining options at Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort, there was never a desire to go elsewhere. After unpacking and settling into my suite, I decided to have a light lunch at Restaurant Hoamat 78, which has an impressive menu (salad bowl, wiener schnitzel, crispy chicken burger, spicy beef basil sauté, steak filet, and pizza), sure to appeal to everyone’s food preferences. Guests can also enjoy Asian cuisine, sushi, or dine at their 2 Gault & Millau toque-awarded steak restaurant, Sirloin Grill & Dine, where I also had the pleasure of dining. The steak was succulent, and the suggested sides and wine successfully complemented every bite.
After a satisfying meal, guests can unwind at the sophisticated Kork & Gloria wine bar, which offers 1,500 wines. The adjoining wine cellar displays over 30,000 bottles of international wines. I was given a tour of the beautiful cellar, which houses various Austrian vintages and a large selection of wines from around the world. The sommelier discussed the regional wines in great detail, even personalizing the experience based on my preferences.
While I don’t smoke cigars, I couldn’t help but notice the cozy ambiance of the nearby cigar lounge. A peek inside revealed something that looked like a refined gentleman’s club with plush leather seating, dark wood walls, and soft lighting filling the space, making it the perfect place to unwind.
Wellness: The Heart of the Resort
At the heart of Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort are the wellness facilities. Although it is seen as alpine-lux, it never feels pretentious or too rigid in its approach. There is a natural flow to the spaces, where I discovered panoramic lounges, pleasant reading corners, and semi-private terraces that allowed for quiet contemplation. I spent every day I was there at the adults-only rooftop pool. Although it was quite chilly outside, the pool was heated, which allowed guests to enjoy it year-round. There are also plenty of indoor-outdoor relaxation areas that are designed to offer serene scenic views from every angle. The area also features a sauna with infusions and rejuvenating whirlpools in a tranquil, undisturbed environment.
The wellness facilities include the popular Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort Mountain Spa. I can say from firsthand experience that it exceeds its reputation. A full-body massage was arranged for me during my stay, and I must admit, I couldn’t imagine a more relaxing time of the day than when my body was receiving the attention it needed. The spa is a multi-level facility committed to holistic wellness. Scents emanate through the corridors that linger and draw you in. The smells are likely coming from the steam rooms infused with aromatic herbs. These same fragrances spill over into the treatment rooms, making it an unforgettable sensory experience.
The spa’s signature treatments include regional ingredients, such as pine oil, arnica, and alpine salt, providing restorative benefits. I must admit that after every massage, I think I’ve received the best one ever! However, nothing could be truer than the one I received at Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort. It was simply incredible. The attentiveness provided by my masseuse was apparent in my desire to luxuriate in the feeling of total relaxation I felt; not wanting to move from my position was a clear indication of the quality of service I’d just received. The spa exceeded my expectations. * Select adults-only wellness areas are designated as textile-free, reflecting traditional Austrian spa culture.
Easy Access to Mountain Adventures
With direct access to ski lifts and the Grossarl-Dorfgastein ski slopes, Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort is a favorite for active travelers seeking fun and adventure in the Alps. No matter when guests arrive at the resort, they will be surrounded by the unending beauty of lush greenery and alpine peaks. Being a ski-in/ski-out and a hike-in/hike-out resort makes it easy for guests to start their day. This feature appeals to anyone who loves the luxury of stepping out onto the slopes the moment the doors open.
There are other ways to enjoy the slopes even if you don’t ski or hike. I visited a vibrant, upbeat mountain restaurant, Sky Lounge Wolke 7. Choosing to dine outside, while the sun was shining brightly, was a treat. It enabled me to take in the panoramic views of the shimmering white snow and the high-energy atmosphere created at the restaurant. There were plenty of skiers and non-skiers enjoying cocktails, champagne, salads, and burgers while listening to EDM music that set the tone for a lively afternoon. The servers were as much a part of the day as the food, cheerful and accommodating. No request was beyond their reach. The food was fantastic! Menu items include everything from traditional schnitzel to unexpected curry dishes, and homemade Kaiserschmarrn, a decadent dessert. From the moment of arrival to departure, I was treated to an exceptional experience I won’t soon forget.
Approachable Alpine Luxury
The time I spent at Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort was restorative, mentally and physically. It successfully created the perfect balance between approachability and luxury, making it easy to find a sense of belonging. With the intentional care and attention provided to their guests, this family-owned and operated wellness retreat stands as an example of what a refined mountain lifestyle looks like.
