The Bugatti W16 Mistral is more than a new model; it is a magnificent, roofless farewell to the most iconic engine of the modern automotive era: the mighty 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16. Named after a powerful, seasonal wind that blows through southern France, the Mistral embodies speed, elegance, and the raw, uncompromised spirit of open-top hypercar motoring. Limited to just 99 units, all pre-sold at a price of around €5 million (approx. $5.4 million) each, this roadster is an instant legend and a piece of automotive history.

Engineering the Ultimate Roadster

Unlike a mere convertible version of the Chiron, the W16 Mistral features an entirely re-engineered carbon-fiber monocoque chassis to compensate for the lack of a fixed roof, ensuring structural integrity and safety without compromising performance or comfort. Its design adheres to Bugatti’s “Form Follows Performance” philosophy, where every curve and intake is meticulously crafted for both aerodynamic efficiency and aesthetic appeal. The distinctive dual air intakes mounted behind the headrests, inspired by classic Bugattis like the Type 57 Roadster Grand Raid, not only feed a rush of air to the massive engine but also serve as crucial rollover supports.

Unrivaled Performance

At its heart is the definitive 1,600 PS (1,578 horsepower) version of the W16 engine, shared with the record-breaking Chiron Super Sport 300+. This powerhouse delivers an immense 1,180 lb-ft of torque, channeled through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission to an all-wheel-drive system. This formidable setup propels the Mistral to an electronically limited top speed of 261 mph (420 km/h) in standard driving, with an achieved open-top world record of 282 mph (453.91 km/h) set in November 2024. The result is a visceral, sensory experience unmatched in the open-top world, allowing drivers to feel the full intensity of the W16 engine’s power and sound.

A Legacy of Luxury and Exclusivity

Inside, the cabin blends luxury with performance, featuring high-end materials, woven leather door panels, and a unique gear shifter that incorporates a subtle homage to Bugatti’s history: a “dancing elephant” sculpture in amber, a tribute to artist Rembrandt Bugatti, brother of founder Ettore.

With all 99 examples spoken for before production began, the W16 Mistral is an incredibly exclusive machine. As the final road-going model to use the legendary W16 engine, the Mistral represents a significant milestone, closing an iconic chapter for Bugatti and the automotive world. It is the ultimate roadster, a perfect blend of engineering brilliance, timeless design, and unmatched performance, ensuring its place in history for decades to come.
