Buy a yacht or charter one

On 13 October 2026, the Australian yacht market produced two stories that are hard not to read side by side. Broker Leigh-Smith Yachts put the 46-metre Benetti Mistress on the market worldwide at A$7.5 million. The same day, Queensland charter company CharterYacht.com announced its arrival with five superyachts.

Mistress for A$7.5 million

Leigh-Smith Yachts has been appointed worldwide central agent for Mistress, which means any sale, wherever in the world, goes through the firm. The asking price is A$7.5 million, and for overseas buyers the broker gives guide figures of €4.66 million and US$5.22 million.

Mistress is 46 metres long, with a gross tonnage of 411 GT. She had a major refit in 2024. Up to 10 guests sleep across six staterooms, and the broker's list of extras runs to a Jacuzzi, a bar, a gym and a sauna. According to the listing, she cruises at 12 knots and can push to 16; at cruising speed the quoted range is up to 3,000 nautical miles. At a rough estimate, Brisbane to Fiji is about 1,500 miles, so in theory she could do the round trip without refuelling, leaving the fuel reserve aside.

A yacht has always been a potent symbol of wealth, and not only in lifestyle magazines. Luxury themes have been a fixture of online casino slots for years, with yachts, expensive cars and champagne landing on the reels in place of cherries and bells. NetEnt built an entire game, Mega Fortune, around that set of symbols. Slots on this theme also feature in the Wild Tokyo Casino catalogue, alongside baccarat, which casinos have traditionally regarded as the high rollers' game. Whoever buys Mistress gets a very tangible version of that symbol, complete with her own crew and a berthing bill.

Leigh-Smith has two offices, one in Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast and the other in Mosman, Sydney.

From one yacht to five

CharterYacht.com was founded by Jordan Greaves, himself a superyacht owner. He launched the company with a single vessel, and within its first year the central charter fleet had grown to five. It counts as a central fleet because the company acts as central, or lead, agent for chartering these yachts.

The largest is the 40.2-metre Mondomarine Impulsive, followed by the 37-metre Heesen Lumir, the 35-metre Sunseeker Sunset and the 30.5-metre Sea Raes. The smallest is the 29.9-metre Moonen Belle, which has just been refitted and now runs on renewable diesel.

The yards behind them are a varied lot, from Italy's Mondomarine and Britain's Sunseeker to the Dutch builders Heesen and Moonen. The practical upshot is that a client can pick by size and character and never has to go to another operator.

Sydney, the Whitsundays, Fiji

As for where they work, the company lists Sydney, the Gold Coast and Brisbane, plus the Whitsunday Islands and Fiji further afield. Two of those, the Gold Coast and Sydney, are where Leigh-Smith has its offices. What is on sale here is the itinerary more than the hours on the water. For guests, that could mean diving the Great Barrier Reef, a day's fishing off North Queensland, or a go at Cloudbreak, the reef break off the Fijian island of Tavarua that surfers everywhere seem to know by name. The wave breaks over shallow reef there, so mistakes tend to hurt.

The charter model isn't hard to explain. Guests pay for their days on board and usually pay separately for the fuel used on the trip. The owner carries a year-round crew, berthing and repairs. Greaves, by the look of it, sees the sums from both sides.

What to choose

Together, the two stories set out the choice almost in black and white. For A$7.5 million, a buyer gets 46 metres fresh out of a refit, and with them a crew, a berth and maintenance for years to come. Those bills are not going away. Charter offers the same islands and the same reef for a week. You don't own a yacht, but you don't carry the costs of one either.

Both stories seem to be saying much the same thing. There is demand for superyachts in Australia both from those who want to own one and from those for whom a couple of weeks a year is enough.

How long it will take to find a buyer for Mistress is not yet clear. As worldwide central agent, Leigh-Smith will be searching far beyond the Gold Coast.
