We had the pristine honor of experiencing Calamigos Ranch Resort & Spa first hand over a summer staycation, and we can honestly say, there is absolutely nothing in the Los Angeles area, perhaps the entire country, that compares to the serenity, beauty, exclusivity, and incredible luxury this experience provided.
Calamigos Ranch Resort & Spa is a 400-acre haven rooted in an absolutely beautiful natural setting, and elevated by thoughtful design. Nestled in the winding hills above the Pacific Ocean, which we refer to as the Canyons of Malibu, the hotel and membership grounds offer everything - indoor-outdoor suites and bungalows, tranquil wellness rituals, the most relaxing spa, stunning pools and lounge areas with a picturesque backdrop at every glance and turn, with surrounding mountain views that still somehow capture the essence of the ocean air that resides a few miles away.
Calamigos Ranch Resort & Spa certainly lives up to its name as a leading world hotel, and indeed represents the pinnacle of luxury hospitality. The customer service was another key component – just absolute perfection from start to finish, with the staff truly going over and beyond to make sure every component of the stay was enjoyable, comfortable and delightful - which left a true impact.
Accommodations include gorgeous beach-inspired one, two, and three-bedroom bungalows, cottage suites, and estate rooms complete with fire pits and patio seating, outdoor classic style porcelain soaking tubs, plus steam showers, bathroom products from premier brands like Flamingo Estate, and plush robes & slippers for a cozy evening under the stars. The fact that you can enjoy such luxury in your bungalow then slide the doors open for a sun-filled bath soak, lounge under the sun in privacy on chase lounges, or sit at night by the fireplace in your personal enclosed patio, really makes for just a one-of-a-kind experience. We enjoyed our bungalow which featured both a rear patio off the master bedroom as well as a welcoming patio complete with fire pit, creating what truly felt like a small home within the grounds.
The design, color palette and decor was so soothing, it evoked relaxation without trying, and happily was filled with all modern amenities such as a gorgeous glass and stone shower in the bathroom with all recently redone flooring, fixtures, two different countertops areas to allow for enough space to move freely and spread out your things, and of course, perfectly chosen furnishings - not to mention the most comfortable of beds. The ideal blend of modern meets traditional, with the perfect influence of Malibu beach that you would desire.
The motto of Calamigos Ranch Resort & Spa is a secluded sanctuary where guests are invited to slow down, reconnect, and restore through thoughtfully curated wellness experiences.
Now for the spa. The property’s luxury spa offers a range of therapeutic treatments, including bespoke facials, restorative massages, and immersive wellness rituals such as sound baths, guided meditation, yoga, and breathwork. Every spa experience includes access to the property’s wellness amenities, including a sauna, cold plunges, red light therapy, tranquil tea room, and adjacent pool. One thing I absolutely loved was that the waiting room chairs are draped with red light therapy blankets – a wonderful touch I have never seen, and brilliant.
We experienced their signature Calamigos massage, with a relaxation focus, which was the most ideal to fall privy to kick off the day, before heading to the pool to lay out under the sun. For those seeking a more active retreat, guests can venture beyond the spa with a guided hike arranged through the concierge, enjoy a game of pickleball, or train at the resort’s state-of-the-art fitness center. The property truly offers everything, which was quite remarkable, and yet showcases it all with such beauty. The pickleball court and tennis court are hidden amongst greenery and arch type decor that lends itself to twinkle lights under the stars for a fantasy like setting.
Cannot Forget The Cuisine – Dining at Calamigos Ranch Resort & Spa was an equally elevated experience. Under the direction of Culinary Director Rosie Mitchell, the property’s culinary program celebrates “seasonal California cuisine inspired by the region’s finest local ingredients.” The House Bar which is just an adorable, intimate and inviting setting surrounding by greenery, a firepit and hot tub (which we dipped in at night), features an extensive mix of signature cocktails offered by skilled mixologists, and The Ranch Club Restaurant, had a variety of delicious dishes such as the Seared Jumbo Scallops, Pastas, and more. A perfect mix of food and drink offerings.
Also must say, the breakfast offerings did not disappoint - one of the best breakfast burritos we have ever had, and the pastry counter at Gentry Market is one of the best we have seen.
Gentry Market is actually open to the public daily on a portion of the grounds that locals and visitors can come through daily. Guests can enjoy artisanal coffee, fresh-pressed juices, seasonal breakfast offerings, salads and wraps, and, on weekends, made-to-order wood-fired pizzas.
Another favorite component was the Calamigos General Store, which had an eclectic mix of items - both for personal use and gift - as well as branded merchandise. Was impossible to choose what to get, because so many things caught our eye. Last but not certainly not least - their members club offering. Calamigos Ranch Resort & Spa also offers an exclusive Private Members Club. “Recognizing a gap in Los Angeles’ social landscape, Calamigos Ranch ownership set out to create a sanctuary where luxury and community can coexist.” Neither a traditional country club nor a conventional social club, Calamigos Private Members Club is a family-forward community and a place where members can create lasting memories with the people who matter most. With curated programming and resort-level amenities, every generation can find exactly what they need. The pool, members clubhouse and facilities of the Members Club were crafted in the perfect way, and we agree with the allure of this membership program, it really is unmatched in the area.
