Großarltal (Grossarltal) valley is in a quaint part of Salzburger Land, south of Salzburg, where the landscape is truly breathtaking. There are wide-open meadows, Alpine forests, steep mountain ranges, and a host of cinematic panoramas. It attracts travelers who tend to appreciate a more authentic, slower-paced mountain getaway. Hikers love the spacious trails, while couples relish the lush scenery, and families enjoy the variety of activities throughout the region. It is seen as a year-round destination. Summer and spring offer visitors extended days exploring the pastures and alpine trails. Autumn is when the wellness resorts begin to fill up, and the winter season unfolds into a world of endless possibilities.

Creative and Cultural Winter Activities in Großarltal, Austria
Thanks to the 10-seater Kieserl gondola, which began operating in winter 2023/24, there is now faster, more comfortable direct access to the summit. Skiers experience longer runs and have another dining option on the peak. Its positioning now allows a descent on both sides of the mountain, making ski circuits smoother and more convenient.
Families visiting will find plenty to do during the colder months of the year in the valley. There is an adventure meadow that provides a playful atmosphere, complete with a magic carpet, snow playground, practice slope, bobsleighs, and a tubing carousel. On the mountain, there’s even more fun to be had, as children can play on a slope with a snow tunnel and other fun features, such as a wave track.

There’s fun for everyone. This year, there will be 100 guided outdoor activities available through BERG-GESUND (a local mountain and outdoor association in Großarltal offering guided alpine tours and events). Climbing, snowshoeing, and ski tours take visitors across peaks and through alpine pastures. It’s a great way to experience the area’s vast terrain. The Grossarl Mountain School will continue to host its creative workshops and art exhibitions during the winter season.

Mark your calendars because there are two signature events you won’t want to miss if you’re visiting the Salzburger Land area this winter. Ski Touring Days will occur January 15-18, 2026. This program offers guided ski tours across the surrounding valley, created for curious explorers who want to venture beyond the pristine slopes. Ski & Wine Enjoyment Week is scheduled for March 14-21, 2026, and is ideally suited for guests who appreciate fine dining and skiers seeking a unique mountain experience. The event features a gondola dinner with wine strolls and a gourmet gala, and the highest farmers’ market in the Alps. Guests experience an elevated level of alpine culture during this week.
Understated Luxury in the Austrian Alps
A town like Großarltal is often overlooked due to the larger resort towns in the region. However, for travelers who want a slower pace, fewer crowds, and genuine hospitality, it’s the perfect Alpine destination. Here, understated luxury isn’t opulent and grand; it is subtle and effortless, which is why many visitors return year after year.
