Google Says AI Search Features Are Driving More Queries and Sending Billions of Extra Clicks to Websites

Google reports that AI powered search features are increasing total search activity. The company says AI Overviews and other AI first tools are generating more queries per user and sending billions of additional clicks back to websites. The announcement aims to counter concerns that AI results reduce organic traffic.

What Google Shared

Google revealed that AI features in Search have produced an increase of more than 10 billion additional clicks to the open web in 2024.

Internal testing from 2025 shows that users conduct more follow up searches after receiving AI assisted answers. The pattern appears strongest in mobile usage.

Google claims that AI Overviews do not replace organic results. Instead they generate more search activity in total. This leads to more outbound clicks overall.

Industry Context

Search volume has grown steadily. Demand for AI assisted search has increased user engagement. Third party estimates show more than 60 percent of users now engage with AI supported search features in some markets.

This increase aligns with a broader rise in AI driven discovery. AI referrals to top websites grew 357 percent year over year in June 2025. That accounted for 1.13 billion visits in a single month.

These numbers show that AI tools are beginning to influence traffic patterns at scale.

What This Means for Publishers and Businesses

Even if search volume rises, competition for clicks also increases. Users see more options. AI driven results compress more information into a single view. That means websites must work harder to earn the click. Title quality and metadata clarity now matter more than ever.

This is why many publishers are focusing on improving ranking by optimizing CTR. A clear and compelling headline influences both human behavior and AI selection logic.

Better titles increase the likelihood of appearing in organic results, AI summaries, and related follow up searches. That makes CTR optimization a revenue driver, not only an SEO task.

What Websites Should Do Now

  • Improve page titles to reflect the primary value of each page.

  • Rewrite meta descriptions to match user intent.

  • Add structured data and schema markup to improve visibility.

  • Strengthen page speed and mobile usability.

  • Monitor traffic from both classic search and AI driven referrals.

  • Track zero click impressions and adjust content strategy as needed.

Anatolii Ulitovskyi, CEO at UNmiss, said:

“Google claims billions of extra clicks from AI features. That is a real signal of changing user behavior. But extra clicks do not guarantee distribution. The sites that win are the ones with strong titles, structured metadata and content designed for clear understanding. A focused CTR and headline audit gives businesses the numbers they need to compete in this new model.”
