How To Be At Your Best In Your Fifties

Entering your fifties can be a little daunting, especially if you’ve read about the U-curve of happiness, which suggests that people entering their sixth decade experience a decline in happiness (that eventually returns in their sixties and seventies).

Even if you do know that things should eventually get better, no one wants to spend ten years waiting for the good times to arrive.

And nor do you have to. By taking a proactive approach, you can make sure that your fifties are as good as any other — and also set yourself up for a successful post-retirement life, too. Here’s how.

Find a Social Physical Activity

Exercise has long been regarded as one of the best ways to boost your well-being, and it’s highly recommended to find an activity that gets your heart rate up when you’re in your fifties.

However, there’s another bit of advice we’d recommend, and that’s to find an exercise that you do with other people. Exercise is great for you, and socializing is great for you — put the two together, and you have a powerful tonic that can significantly boost your physical and mental wellbeing. Cycling, yoga, hiking, and sports teams are all great options for getting a sweat on and having fun at the same time.

Take Care Of Your Senses

The body changes once you’re in your fifties. Some of these are noticeable — you may hear more creaks, for instance — while others are gradual and more subtle, such as eyesight and hearing issues.

Because they’re gradual, many people in their fifties delay seeking treatment for vision and hearing problems, not realizing that the delay is negatively impacting their quality of life. Taking action early, such as getting prescription glasses or taking steps to find hearing aids locally, can ensure that you don’t miss out on seeing and hearing the things that make life worth living. Even if you don’t think you’re experiencing eye or hearing issues, it’s still important to get regular check-ups once a year to ensure you’re fully informed of any changes as soon as possible.

Proactively Invest in Mental Wellbeing

Many people wait until they hit a crisis before they invest in their mental health, but it makes a lot more sense to take a proactive approach to your mental well-being, especially in your fifties, a decade that can bring a host of new stressors.

We know more than ever how to boost mental well-being — the key is to actually make the effort to spend more time outdoors, reduce alcohol intake, meditate, and spend time with friends.

Challenge Yourself

The brain likes novelty, but when we’re in our fifties, much of what we do has become second-nature. Challenging yourself to try something new not only helps to keep the brain sharp, but it can also be a great confidence booster that shows you that there are still plenty of things that you can accomplish. Whether it’s learning a musical instrument, taking up painting, or joining an acting class, you might just find it’s one of the best decisions you make.
