Sesshu Designs - Desert Mountain

Sesshu Designs recently completed a contemporary style home renovated with new wall finishes, fireplace, and furnishings to reflect the new owners’ style. Soft desert color palette of sage green, taupe, charcoal, ivory and tan are used throughout the home to tie together each rooms unique design.

The clients are part-time residents with their other home in Southern California. He is a semi-retired veterinarian and avid hunter, and she is retired. Both are avid hikers and love the outdoors – they specifically chose this house for its views, and its quiet, remote location close to hiking trails. He trains and competes with his hunting dogs at events in his spare time.

The house was originally designed by architect Terry Kilbane to be his personal home. It is located in Saguaro Forest, one of the most exclusive villages within Desert Mountain in north Scottsdale. It has an abundant number of saguaros, which is readily noticeable as soon as you drive through the entrance. This private gated village boasts rich dramatic sight lines of golf courses and mountain vistas.

Sesshu replaced the entry door with a dramatic and artistic custom glass and steel door designed by Bob Berg at Chanikva Studio. The door provides privacy through use of colored and textured glass in key areas, while allowing light and views of the mountains with clear glass at eye level. The clients enjoyed participating in the selection of various glass and design elements with the designer, visiting the artist’s studio several times to get the desired look. They were so pleased with the results they commissioned a custom piece of glass art for the dining room wall as well.

All new furnishings in a contemporary style with comfort as the top priority. Sofas from A Rudin in Los Angeles in a textural weave fabric with custom printed velvet throw pillows with an organic pattern reminiscent of stones designed by a California artist. Custom all wool rug – natural, non-dyed in a dynamic irregular pattern directs attention to the focal point of the fireplace. A custom wood, steel, and glass cocktail table was designed and produced locally with a slab of deadfall walnut in a natural finish that illuminates the beauty of the wood.

The master bedroom bed was hand-made in California. With a dark ebony finish, the bed provides contrast with the lighter wall finished in a pearlescent texture plaster. Again with comfort as a top priority, the bedding is a silk and cotton matelassé in a luxurious soft pebble texture, with accent pillows in dark charcoal bouclé and a lustrous woven silk pattern. The daybed in mohair velvet provides a casual place for an afternoon nap or a convenient place to hold extra pillows at night.

A custom media cabinet with raised ribbed detail on doors was created to fit the corner of the uniquely shaped bedroom, providing storage and a visual anchor for the television on the wall.

In the home office, a desk in two contrasting finishes combines the finish of his existing cherry furniture with the new grey tones of the wall cabinets. Together, the design creates simple clean lines with strong architectural styling.
