The Golf Club at Devils Tower - Hulett, WY

There’s something special about The Golf Club at Devils Tower in Wyoming. Not only is it the majestic scenery of the unspoiled west, but the humbleness and kindness of the man who started it all. Jim Neiman, Sr says, “They thought I was crazy putting a golf course in this little town, they said nobody would come, I guess they were wrong.”

When ready to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life there is no better place to lose yourself. The quietness and natural beauty that surrounds the area is unmatched. “We didn’t want the course near the highway so people could play in peace,” says Neiman. While golfing, you are sure to come across an abundance of wildlife, especially the deer and turkey.

Local sawmill owner Jim Neiman Sr. established the original layout as a recreational outlet for his sawmill employees with just three holes carved from a bluff overlooking Devils Tower, but the project grew after such a modest start – he built a runway nearby for those wishing to fly in for a game! You can now go from Tarmac to Tee in ten minutes.

“After spending two million dollars to construct the original nine-hole course, I found out I didn’t know what I was doing and we had to start all over,” laughs Neiman. “When we saw the potential, several of the best in the golf design business were hired to create a course we would be proud of.”

Designed by Phelps-Atkinson Golf Design, Kevin Atkinson ASGCA, The Golf Club at Devils Tower is an 18 Hole, Par 72 course spread over approximately 150 acres. Playing from the tips are not for the faint of heart, as the 7,111 yard layout plays to a USGA rating of 73.1 and a slope of 129. The course ranked in 2021 Golfweek’s Top Private Courses in Wyoming.

This gem, nestled in the Black Hills, provides numerous trees surrounding the grounds, with fairways that feature slight undulations and greens sprinkled with beautiful backdrops. Water comes into play on five of the holes, but only two require a tee shot over water. Every hole has five tee boxes, so anyone can find their perfect spot. Golfers face 77 bunkers that are rough around the edges and fairways are framed by native grasses.

The course sits on almost 1,000 acres of unspoiled Wyoming land. “I bought the land behind the golf course so no one could build there. I didn’t want the view from the clubhouse deck or the view from the course to be whatever someone might build there.” In 2019 the new clubhouse was opened with an elevated deck for dining or relaxing with a beverage. The scenery is remarkable. An outdoor patio with a gas firepit was created for those who want to sit under the western sky.

The 77 Steakhouse & Saloon, the restaurant of the club, takes you back into western history. The Neiman family made sure everything represents Wyoming, from the artifacts to the pictures on the walls. In fact, Jim purchased a bar that had been built in 1895, had it fully restored, and built the club to fit the bar. “People come from all over to see it. Again, they said I was crazy, but here it is,” grins Neiman. “This restaurant was built by working people, for working people, and they should come as they are. No fancy clothes needed here. It’s a place for people to relax.” The historic bar history can be seen on the club’s website.

The Golf Club at Devils Tower offers five different membership options. Large or small corporate options are available. Regional and national membership options are available based on where an individual lives.

Currently the club has eight bunkhouse rooms (hotel style) for lodging, along with two large cabins. The old clubhouse is being relocated and turned into a hunting lodge. More bunkhouses will occupy the space being vacated. Corporate style condos are also in the planning stages to increase the lodging capacity.

Log home building lots are available for those who wish to stake their claim in the west. Imagine a vacation getaway home, a permanent home, or even vacation rental investment home in Wyoming. The lower front nine lots are available now, and platting is taking place on the upper nine lots. Some of the lots have a view of Devils Tower but all are spectacular.

“From our family to yours, we welcome you to Hulett and The Golf Club at Devils Tower, where some things can’t be described; they must be experienced!”
