West Side Road Residence in San Juan Island, Washington by Heliotrope Architects

The home is comprised of four structures organized to create a courtyard space, protected from offshore winds - as well as from a robust deer population intent on garden destruction. The clients desired a low-maintenance design, respectful of its exposure to the elements and built to last generations. Each structure is a simple gable, with deep overhangs for weather protection.

Connection between buildings is provided via a courtyard engawa, allowing engagement with the garden, and each structure is sited to feature views of particular aspects of a varied and rich natural environment.
