Elegance in the Emirates - The Story of the Dubai Desert Classic

In a city synonymous with innovation and ambition, the Hero Dubai Desert Classic unfolds as much as a lifestyle experience as it does a sporting contest. Framed by one of the world’s most recognisable skylines, the tournament transcends competition — standing as a cultural fixture, a social moment, and a living expression of Dubai’s rise as an international sporting capital.

First staged in 1989, the Dubai Desert Classic holds a singular place in the region’s sporting history. At a time when professional golf in the Middle East was still in its infancy, the tournament arrived with quiet confidence, laying foundations not only for elite competition, but for a vision of what sport in Dubai could become. More than three decades on, it remains one of the oldest professional golf tournaments in the emirate — a rare example of longevity in a city often defined by the new.

That sense of heritage is inseparable from its home at the iconic Emirates Golf Club. The Majlis Course, the first grass golf course in the Middle East, is one of the sport’s most distinctive venues. Carved through desert terrain yet framed by water, palms and sculpted fairways, it offers a striking balance between nature and architecture, rewarding precision, strategy and composure.

As the championship unfolds each January, the course becomes a stage where tradition and modernity converge. By day, the fairways sit in calm contrast to the city beyond; by night, Dubai’s skyline illuminates the closing holes, transforming the Majlis into one of the most atmospheric arenas in world golf. Nowhere is this theatre more evident than at the iconic 18th hole, where competition reaches its climax beneath the glow of glass towers and floodlights, watched on from one of the sport’s most celebrated hospitality settings.

Reflecting on the tournament’s journey from regional pioneer to global benchmark, Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, highlights the moments that shaped its international stature:

“The Hero Dubai Desert Classic has always attracted the finest players in the world. When you look at our roll call of champions - Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Seve Ballesteros, Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie, José María Olazábal - it reads like a who’s who of golf legends. These players helped establish the tournament’s credibility on the global stage from the very beginning.”

Corkill points to the tournament’s elevation to the Rolex Series as a defining milestone - recognition that placed the event among the very best globally and validated decades of careful growth both on and off the course.

That evolution is also reflected in the tournament’s carefully curated network of partners. Rolex, synonymous with heritage and precision, has long been integral to the event’s global standing, while BMW brings automotive craftsmanship and performance into its premium on-site landscape. Together, these relationships reinforce the Dubai Desert Classic’s positioning at the intersection of sport, luxury and experience.

Hospitality, in particular, plays a defining role. The appointment of Destination Mina Seyahi as official hotel partner further elevates the tournament’s lifestyle credentials. Bringing together The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Le Méridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Waterpark, and W Dubai - Mina Seyahi, the waterfront enclave offers a seamless blend of design, energy and refined coastal living just minutes from Emirates Golf Club. Overlooking the Arabian Gulf, it has become a natural hub for players, partners and international guests, extending the Desert Classic experience well beyond the fairways.

The return of Emirates as an official partner reinforces Dubai’s position at the crossroads of global sport and luxury travel. For the international audience drawn to the tournament each year, the airline acts as a natural gateway - connecting the championship to a worldwide audience and complementing the event’s elevated sense of arrival with its signature premium travel experience.

The Dubai Desert Classic’s ability to attract a world-class field continues to underline its status as one of the most coveted stages in professional golf. For players, winning in Dubai carries a particular resonance - not simply another stop on the calendar, but a moment framed by spectacle, heritage and setting. For spectators, whether lining the fairways or enjoying the tournament through its hospitality programme, the event delivers a sense of theatre and anticipation few tournaments can match.

Former Masters champion Patrick Reed (USA) secured his first victory at the 2026 edition, finishing four strokes clear of his nearest rival. It was also Reed’s first Rolex Series title at the DP World Tour’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic. The former Masters champion took a four-shot lead into the final day at Emirates Golf Club and never relinquished control.

Nearly 40 years after its first tee shot, the Dubai Desert Classic remains a benchmark for how elite sport can be experienced - with elegance, ambition and a deep sense of occasion.
