Harbor Shores Along Lake Michigan - Where Luxury Golf Meets Purpose

Along the southwestern shoreline of Lake Michigan, where towering dunes meet the winding Paw Paw River, Harbor Shores Resort stands as one of golf’s most compelling luxury destinations — and one of its most meaningful success stories.

Now an upscale waterfront retreat of championship golf, boutique accommodations, refined dining, and lakeside leisure, the property was once entirely different. The land was previously home to millions of square feet of industrial property and a once-thriving manufacturing community that would transform into one of the most ambitious examples of golf-driven economic revitalization in America.

At the center of that vision was Whirlpool Corporation and the Whirlpool Foundation, which helped lead more than $900 million in strategic investments designed not simply to build a golf course, but to help reimagine an entire community. Harbor Shores became the catalyst — a destination capable of attracting tourism, private investment, homeowners and long-term economic opportunity back to Benton Harbor.

The result is a resort experience that feels elevated and authentic. Its centerpiece is Harbor Shores Golf Club, the acclaimed Jack Nicklaus Signature Design that’s hosted the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship six times and earned recognition as one of the Midwest’s most visually dramatic public courses. Nicklaus himself has called it one of his favorite designs.

What separates Harbor Shores architecturally is its remarkable diversity of terrain. Few courses transition so dramatically from one landscape to another. The opening stretch meanders through inland terrain and wetlands before giving way to holes routed along the massive dunes of Lake Michigan. From there, the course shifts into hardwood forests and rolling ravines and then concludes along the wetlands and river corridors of the Paw Paw River.

The routing balances championship-caliber strategy with moments of natural scenery. Lake Michigan appears suddenly and spectacularly on the outward nine, while the closing stretch delivers a quieter beauty framed by wetlands, native grasses and golden evening light.

Harbor Shores has never been solely about elite golf. The resort’s latest chapter arrived this season with the opening of the Wee Course at Harbor Shores, a nine-hole short course designed by World Golf Hall of Famer Colin Montgomerie.

Set across five acres adjacent to the championship course, the Wee Course was designed to make golf approachable, social and highly accessible. Holes range from 20 to 80 yards, and incorporate strategic green complexes inspired by the Nicklaus layout. An entire round can be played in under an hour.

Inspired by Scotland’s community golf culture, the Wee Course, which is lighted for evening play, embraces a relaxed, entertainment-driven atmosphere where families, juniors, couples, and serious golfers coexist. Players can walk on casually, play with only a putter from forward tees, enjoy music and the adjacent lighted putting course, or gather afterward at Monty’s Place for food and drinks overlooking the action.

In many ways, the Wee Course reflects Harbor Shores’ modern philosophy: golf as a connector. That philosophy extends throughout the resort experience, particularly at the Inn at Harbor Shores. Situated along the St. Joseph River just minutes from Lake Michigan’s beaches and marina district, the 92-room hotel serves as the property’s social centerpiece.

Inside, guests find a refined coastal aesthetic that balances Midwest warmth with upscale sophistication. Suites overlook the river and marina, while rooftop gathering spaces, spa amenities, indoor and outdoor pools, and multiple dining venues create the feel of a boutique waterfront resort. Plank’s Tavern on the Water has become a favorite post-round setting, while Torch & Tapas and Rise & Vine extend the culinary experience well beyond traditional golf resort expectations.

For golf groups, the new Champions Villas have further elevated Harbor Shores’ stay-and-play appeal. Along the first fairway near the clubhouse, the spacious four-bedroom villas blend residential comfort with private-club style. Expansive kitchens, open-concept living areas, and outdoor gathering spaces create an ideal setting for extended golf weekends and group retreats.

The resort’s Champions Package seamlessly ties the experience together, pairing villa accommodations with unlimited golf for four guests — allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the destination, from morning rounds along the dunes to twilight putting contests beneath the lights of the Wee Course.

Today, Harbor Shores has become far more than a golf resort. It’s a living example of how thoughtful development, community partnership, and golf can reshape an entire region. The resort now supports expanded tourism, real estate developments, and youth initiatives throughout Benton Harbor.
