Windows 7 and 8 No Longer Support Steam Games After New Update

Steam has finally stopped supporting the older Windows 7 and 8 operating systems. The latest Steam client update, released on November 5, ended access to the platform for these operating systems. Valve had previously warned.

The move was not unexpected: Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7 and 8 several years ago. Valve planned to abandon these systems in 2021. Now Steam only works on Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux, and macOS.

According to recent statistics, only 0.28% of Steam users remained on Windows 7, while the share of Windows 8 and 8.1 was only 0.08% of the total number of players. So for the few remaining Windows 7 users, this is the end of an era. Steam supported the system since its launch in 2009, and now, 15 years later, this support has ended.

Scarlet Lake

Horror games always work best when there’s some distance to create an atmosphere of dread and suspense. Like the fixed camera angles of classic Resident Evil games, or the moments when the xenomorph stays out of sight in Alien Isolation. Scarlet Lake, is a new horror game inspired by Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, and Signali. It uses this technique to create a stylish isometric take on the genre. The game is already available in a demo.

Players take on the role of Detective Ben Murphy. Ben receives a letter from his missing wife, calling him to the town of Scarlet Lake. When he arrives, he finds the town quarantined due to a biological threat. His partner was injured. Like classic games in the genre, Scarlet Lake challenges players to explore areas, solve puzzles, scavenge for ammo, and choose whether to fight or flee from the monsters.

Scarlet Lake stands out from other horror games with its distinct CRPG-like visual style, with detailed monsters and body physics, giving the game a balance of old-fashioned atmosphere and modern elements. The carefully crafted locations and atmospheric details can be reminiscent of a closer look at the world of Fallout.

The demo is available on Steam now. If you liked Crow Country, Hollowbody, or Signalis, you'll love Scarlet Lake too.

Rockstar Games Has Updated The GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition remasters

Rockstar Games has released an update for all of the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition games. It not only improves the gameplay but also brings back the visual style of the original versions released on PlayStation 2 in the early 2000s.

The GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition includes remasters of three classic PS2-era games - GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Upon its release in November 2021, the trilogy was widely criticized for bugs, poor visual changes, simplified character models, and overall quality. Despite several updates shortly after release, these versions remained disappointing for two years. However, in 2023, Netflix released remasters for mobile devices, which were significantly improved. Now, a year later, these changes, as well as new improvements, have been made available for the PC and console versions.

Rockstar Games has quietly released an update for GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Twitter user BeskInfinity has documented a slew of changes, ranging from visual to gameplay improvements.

One of the most notable additions is the addition of the "Classic Lighting" option, first introduced in the Netflix mobile titles. In games like San Andreas, the lighting is now closer to the original. Warm sunsets, purple deserts, and gloomy storm clouds bring back a familiar atmosphere. Fog has also been added, making the maps appear larger as distant objects are no longer fully visible.

The update isn't limited to lighting. Animations have been fixed, shadow rendering has been improved, and streetlights now have a glow. Clouds at high altitudes have been improved in San Andreas. A major gameplay change is that the player can now move while aiming with any weapon, not just a pistol or machine gun.

In addition, the logo of Grove Street Games, the studio that worked on the original remasters and mobile ports, has been removed. Their work has caused a lot of criticism from the community. The mobile versions and part of the new update were developed by Video Games Deluxe, the studio that previously adapted L.A. Noire for VR.
