Robin Antar - Award-Winning Sculptor

Robin Antar is a Brooklyn, New York native and an award-winning sculptor who happens to be blind in one eye.

But that hasn’t stopped her from becoming a prolific artist, whose works in stone have been collected by NY cognoscenti and exhibited around the world at prestigious galleries and museums, as well as corporate offices. She's been dubbed the "Andy Warhol' of Brooklyn.

Antar tells stories in stone. From her hyper-realistic icons of American pop culture tinged with the artist’s wry sense of humor to a deep dive into personal and national trauma and conflict, Antar’s parallel and intertwining bodies of work span her 40-year career as an artist-observer of American life and human nature.

Says Antar, “My passion is to create virtual records of cultural and personal events that have impacted me greatly. All of my work is rooted in observation - whatever is going on, I express it in stone.

After 9/11, I began to ask, ‘What is America?’ America is comfort food: Oreo cookies, a Ballpark Frank, a hamburger with fries. I also did condiments because every restaurant you go to there’s mayonnaise and ketchup – it’s a big thing for America.”

In fact, her distinct work of food themed sculptures, meticulously carved  in stone and then applied with customized oil-based stains, achieves an effect that is so real it leaves the viewer asking, “Is it sculpture or is it the real thing?”  From her 800-pound bag of M& M’s to her Peppermint Patty and Heinz ketchup bottle, they seem so life-like you want to reach out and eat them.

“She has a talent for turning common items into iconic sculptures that reflect American life and values, according to  critic Ashan Kusalanka. “Her sculptures resonate emotionally, telling stories that engage viewers.”

Antar’s work has appeared in exhibitions at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum in New Jersey, Pop International Galleries in New York City, Sotheby’s, The National Arts Club, Nabisco Gallery, City Museum of St. Louis, Provincetown Art Museum, the MGM Grand Hotel, The Alternative Museum at Montclair State University, Pen and Brush Inc., Bradley Gallery/Indiana State University and New York University’s Loeb Student Center, among others.

And while Antar’s sculptures are highly prized, many pieces are surprisingly affordable, making them a perfect choice—and a brilliant investment— for those at the very top of one’s holiday gift list.
