Signs Your Personal Injury Lawyer Isn’t Right for You

There were 48,373 personal injury law firms registered in 2023, a decline of 0.8% on the previous year. Even so, that’s a lot of personal injury lawyers to choose from, and many of them won’t be right for your case. How can you tell when it’s time to choose a new lawyer?

Choosing the right personal injury lawyer to represent you in your case is crucial. The attorney you hire can make all the difference in whether you receive a fair settlement or are able to successfully litigate your case. Here are some signs that indicate your personal injury lawyer may not be right for you.
They Don't Specialize in Your Type of Case
One of the most important things to look for in an injury attorney is expertise in your specific type of injury. Personal injury law encompasses many different types of cases, including car accidents, slip and falls, medical malpractice, and more.
The number of police reported auto accidents in 2022 hit 5.9 million, so most PI law firms represent auto accident claimants, but a niche area like maritime law is less well represented, with only 2,646 maritime incidents each year.
Make sure any personal injury attorney you are considering specializes specifically in the type of incident that caused your injuries. An attorney who mainly handles auto accident cases may not have the right experience to get the best results for your medical malpractice lawsuit.
They Have Poor Communication
Communication is key between an attorney and their client. Your lawyer should be easily reachable, return calls and emails promptly, and keep you regularly updated on the status of your case. If you find it difficult to get a hold of your attorney or feel like you are being kept in the dark, this is not a good sign. A personal injury lawyer who doesn't communicate well may not have your best interests in mind.
They Push You to Accept a Settlement
Ethical personal injury lawyers will provide their professional guidance but allow you to make the ultimate decision about any settlement offer. If your attorney is pressuring you to accept a settlement you're not comfortable with, be wary. Your health and long-term well-being should take priority over a quick payout. The average settlement for a personal injury car accident case is $16,000 but settlements for medical malpractice, for example, are a lot higher.
They Don't Go Over Your Case Details Thoroughly
A competent personal injury lawyer will want to know every possible detail about your incident, injuries, medical treatment, and losses due to the accident. If your attorney doesn't ask many questions or seem engaged in fully understanding your unique case, they may not be motivated to get you the maximum compensation. Make sure your lawyer takes time to go over your case thoroughly.
They Have a Disorganized Office and Staff
While appearances aren't everything, the environment at your lawyer's office can say something about how effectively they handle cases. If their office seems highly disorganized, their staff seems incompetent, or it's difficult to get calls returned, these could be red flags your attorney does not have an efficient practice. Your case deserves undivided attention and organized handling, so be wary of lawyers with chaotic offices.
Go with your gut feelings. If something seems off about your personal injury attorney, it may be time to find someone new. Don't waste time with a lawyer who isn't the right fit. Finding an attorney truly dedicated to getting you justice and full compensation is critical.
