SUPERYACHTS NEXT LEVEL DEFINITION

YES, Ma’am
Behind every choice,
there's a voice.
The woman/partner behind the man finally decides.
In yacht acquisitions, the signature on the contract is rarely the whole decision. I've watched it happen more than once: the buyer is ready to sign, contract in front of him, pencil in hand. Then comes the calm sentence:
“Let's think it over for one night.”
And the deal quietly dies.
Not because the yacht was wrong on paper. But because the yacht was wrong for the life that would be lived on board.
Two Yesses, One Yacht.
Two lives converge in one decision.
A yacht can be technically excellent, aesthetically pleasing, and reasonably priced and still be the wrong choice if the people who will actually live aboard her are not aligned.
That's why l believe a serious yacht search should begin with conversation not listings.
In the YES/Yacht Europe System, we call this the Definition Phase: the first task isn't to find a yacht; it's to understand the people behind the purchase. This may include the owner, partner, captain, family office, or other trusted advisors, each offering a unique perspective. The owner may have a clear idea of what they want, the captain understands operational realities, the family office prioritizes protection of assets, and the partner often holds insight into the yacht's viability as a living space,`Do l feel atHome`.
A specification sheet doesn't tell the whole story.
The principal often focuses on performance, engineering, range, resalevalue, and timing. The partner often sees the real-world truth faster:
How the yacht feels after week two, not hour one
·Flow of movement: guest areas vs private areas
· Galley location okay
·The balance of intimacy vs entertaining
·Whether the layout works for chartering
·Crew realities: whether crew spaces force awkward guest interaction
These are not "soft” preferences. They are the reasons people keep or reject a yacht.
Equally important is securing your partner's commitment to the chosen yacht
Only after these viewpoints are clarified should the market search begin. The best yacht isn't necessarily the one that wows everyone during a viewing; it is the one that continues to feel right long after the guests have left.
One honest question.
If you look at your current yacht and ask Would both of you choose her again today?
If the answer is not an immediate yes, it doesn't automatically mean "sell." But it usually means the next step is a deeper conversation, before you spend months touring the wrong boats.
