There are many opportunities to discover different cultures, scenery and sights across the continent, so it’s worth taking the time to decide on your destination based on what you need to keep everyone happy for a week or more, whether that’s action-packed activities or golden beaches.

To help you narrow your search, read on. We’ve rounded up some of the most popular locations in Europe that are sure to keep the whole family occupied.

Greece

Greece stands out as a fantastic destination for families. While Athens is a capital offers historic sites and the many islands have their own unique charms, there is one standout choice that lends itself to a family holiday.

Corfu is the perfect summer retreat. Located in the glittering Ionian Sea, the island is filled with lush landscapes, sun-kissed beaches, and rich history, creating the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure for families.

There’s the UNESCO-listed Old Town, which features narrow cobblestone streets and vibrant markets, creating a charming backdrop for family strolls. If you love to find out about a destination’s past, you’ll love the Old and New Fortresses. These are perhaps the most recognisable landmarks on the island. The Old Fortress is located in the Old Town and dates to the 6th century while the New Fortress was built on the hill of St Mark by the Venetians between 1576 and 1645.

Should you want to spend the day at the beach, you’ll find just under 60 to choose from. Corfu's beaches provide idyllic settings for sun-soaked days, from the family-friendly shallow waters of Daissa Bay on the east coast to water sports at Paleokastritsa on the west coast, there are plenty of activities and settings on the shoreline.

There are lots of recommended areas to stay on the island if you’re travelling as a family too. Take your pick from resorts such as Acharavi, with its tavernas and Sidari, with its banana boat and pedalos.

Portugal

For those desiring a slightly different experience, the Algarve, Portugal's southernmost region, is a beautiful destination for a sun-drenched trip. Golden beaches, picturesque cliffs, and charming villages make this a pretty location for a holiday.

Families can bask in the sunshine on the region's pristine beaches, such as Praia da Marinha and Meia Praia. There are also cliffs and hidden caves, perfect for boat trips or on coastal hikes.

The Algarve's villages, like Lagos and Albufeira, provide a taste of authentic Portuguese culture and cuisine. You can stroll through cobbled streets, indulge in freshly caught seafood at local restaurants, and discover historic landmarks.

There are outdoor activities that will keep your adventurous kids entertained too, from water sports along the coast to exploring the region's natural parks and reserves. Zoomarine, a marine-themed park, provides an entertaining and educational experience for families.

France

France, with its diverse regions, continues to be a popular choice for families seeking a memorable holiday.

The French Riviera, synonymous with glamour, offers families a sun-soaked haven. Glittering beaches, such as Nice's Promenade des Anglais and glamorous St. Tropez. There are also medieval villages like Eze or the artistic Antibes.

Further north, Normandy and Brittany offer quiet coastal escapes. Here, families can wander along windswept beaches, such as Omaha Beach, and explore historic landmarks like Mont Saint-Michel.

Seaside spots along the Côte d’Azur also offer an array of water activities. Along nearly 200 kilometres of coastline, you can hike, dive, go snorkelling or paddleboarding. There’s plenty to keep the whole family happy here.

Spain

Spain remains a go-to choice for families. The short-plan journeys from the UK make this an attractive option for those with little ones, while an airport taxi can easily be arranged to take everyone directly to their accommodation and save significant time, which is key when travelling with kids! There are many areas to choose from, but Costa del Sol and Tenerife both make ideal destinations for unforgettable family holiday, each offering a blend of sun-soaked leisure and exciting adventures.

Costa del Sol, on the southern coast of Spain, has a warm Mediterranean climate and sandy beaches, such as Burriana Beach in Nerja and Playa de la Malagueta in Malaga.
