What a Move in the Helsinki Capital Region Actually Costs in 2026
Two movers and a van currently run at roughly 70–95 € an hour in the capital region, and a three-room home moved within Helsinki usually lands between 700 and 1500 €. That is a spread of several hundred euros for flats of identical size, and it almost never reflects one company's margin. It reflects how the invoice is assembled: which hours are counted, when the meter starts, and how many flights of stairs stand between the sofa and the street.
Labour hours are the biggest single line
On most moving invoices, 60–75 per cent of the total is time. The hourly rate normally covers the vehicle and two people; a third pair of hands adds 25–40 € an hour. What surprises people is when the clock starts: many firms bill from the moment the van leaves the depot until it returns, which is why a callout or vehicle fee of 30–80 € appears on the quote. Nearly everyone also applies a minimum of two or three hours, so a studio that genuinely takes ninety minutes is still charged the minimum.
When comparing quotes, look hard at what the hourly rate includes. Finnish companies name their service-area pages after the city, so searching in Finnish for Muutto Helsinki or muuttopalvelu Espoo is what surfaces local operators' area pages rather than the national comparison sites. The pages look alike; the pricing structures do not. One firm includes blankets, straps and a sack truck in the rate, another itemises them. Ask whether equipment, liability insurance and furniture assembly sit inside the rate — those questions explain most of the gap between a 780 € quote and an 1150 € one.
Kilometres and vehicle size
Distance charges rarely decide anything inside the capital region: Helsinki to Espoo is perhaps 20–30 km, and at 0,8–1,5 € per kilometre that is a few tens of euros. Kilometres matter only above about a hundred, or when the load will not fit in one run — a second trip out to Matinkylä costs more in labour than in fuel, because at rush hour it takes three quarters of an hour each way.
A standard van holds 12–16 cubic metres, enough for a studio or small two-room flat; a three-room home is typically 25–40, meaning a lorry or two runs. Doing it yourself, van hire is indicatively 60–120 € a day plus kilometres, fuel and an insurance excess reduction.
Stairs, no lift and carry distance: the Helsinki premium
This is where the capital region diverges most sharply from the rest of Finland. Central Helsinki is full of early twentieth-century buildings with no lift, or with a lift so narrow that a three-seater sofa will not go in. Carrying to a third floor without one adds 1,5–3 hours to a three-room move — 100–300 € in labour — and many firms charge a stair fee of 20–50 € per floor on top. Pre-war ceilings are also higher, so a third floor in Ullanlinna means as many steps as a fourth floor in a 1980s suburban block.
The second local speciality is carry distance. In Kruununhaka, Punavuori or Kallio the van often cannot stop outside the stairwell door, and if the walk from vehicle to entrance is 40 metres, dozens of trips add up to an extra billed hour. Reserving a temporary parking space costs a few tens of euros through the city and is frequently the highest-return line in the budget. A tight spiral staircase does the same thing: furniture has to come apart, and dismantling is billed exactly like carrying.
Materials and add-ons
Packing materials are a small but consistent cost: a three-room home eats 30–50 boxes and a budget of 80–200 €. A box is a couple of euros; it is the tape, bubble wrap, mattress covers and wardrobe boxes that add up. Everything else depends on how much work you hand over:
Packing service, about 40–60 € per hour per person; a three-room flat takes one to two working days
Move-out cleaning, 250–600 € depending on size, or roughly 4–8 € per square metre
Piano transport, 250–600 €, with grand pianos considerably more and stairs raising it further
Dismantling and reassembling furniture, 1–3 hours, especially beds and sliding-door wardrobes
Recycling and waste fees, 50–150 € depending on the volume taken away
Storage, 30–120 € a month, often needed when the two tenancy dates refuse to line up
A full-service move — packing, transport, unpacking and cleaning — is indicatively 1500–3500 €, which sounds steep until you price two days of your own annual leave.
Timing is the one free saving
Demand clusters at the turn of the month and across the summer. From May to August, and on the last working days of any month, calendars are full and there is no room to negotiate. Weekend and evening surcharges run 20–50 per cent above the base rate, and the same job on a Wednesday mid-month can be 15–25 per cent cheaper than on a Saturday at month's end.

The tax credit, and the costs outside the invoice
The labour portion of both the move and the move-out cleaning qualifies for kotitalousvähennys, the household tax credit. In practice the deduction requires labour to appear separately from materials and kilometres, so ask for that itemisation up front — unpicking a finished invoice afterwards is tedious.
Other costs never reach the mover's bill but land in the same month. The vuokravakuus, the deposit on the new flat, is usually one or two months' rent; the muuttoilmoitus, the change-of-address notification to Digi- ja väestötietovirasto and Posti, is free. Call the isännöitsijä, the property manager of the taloyhtiö that owns the building, about lift access and moving-day restrictions. Overlapping rent on two flats is often larger than the whole moving service.
How to estimate your own move
Start with volume: a studio is roughly 10–15 cubic metres, a two-room flat 15–25, a three-room 25–40, a house 50 upwards. Estimate labour at one hour per five cubic metres, assuming everything is packed in advance and there is a working lift at both ends, then add 30–50 per cent for no lift or a long carry. Multiply by the hourly rate and add the callout fee, materials and cleaning.
If your figure is 900 € and three quotes come back between 850 and 1100, the pricing is healthy and you can choose on other grounds. If one is 450 €, something has been left out — usually insurance, the minimum charge or the stairs. Request every quote in writing on identical information, be honest about floors, lifts, carry distance and packing, and compare the itemised lines rather than the totals. That is the only way to know what you are buying.
