Whilst pool tables are a big investment, they provide an activity for family and guests, bringing countless hours of enjoyment. Whether being added to a dedicated games room, as part of a larger space or sitting within a large open-plan space, a pool table provides not only a fun activity but a beautiful and sophisticated decorative piece.

However, technology is unfortunately not at the point yet where you can simply have the perfect design and colour table you’ve seen online teleported perfectly into place, so there are many major factors that you will need to consider prior to purchasing your dream pool table, we’ve summarised them below to help you make the right choice. 

Measure Your Space Properly

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is underestimating the amount of room needed around the table. It is not enough to merely fit the just table into a room or space; there needs to be adequate space for players to move around the table and cue easily.  Generally speaking, you should allow at least one and a half metres (five foot) of clearance around the entire table, this will ensure that players can comfortably use standard-length cues without awkward positioning, restricted shots or the risk of damage to walls or furnishings.

Understand UK and US Pool Table Sizes

Pool tables are built to different sizes and dimensions depending on the type of pool being played on them. UK pool tables like Hamilton Billiards are typically smaller, the type that are found in pubs and bars in the UK are typically standard UK sized pool tables. Standard UK sizes usually include:

• 6ft tables 

• 7ft tables (the most common UK pub size)

Understand the Difference Between Slate and MDF Tables

The playing surface is one of the biggest quality differences between pool tables. Slate tables are considered the gold standard because they provide a perfectly level and highly durable playing surface, making them the default choice for professional environments and pubs alike. Slate also offers better ball roll consistency and longevity. 

MDF (medium-density fibreboard) tables are lighter and generally more affordable. They may suit casual players or households where the table will be used occasionally rather than competitively. However, the one big advantage that MDF has over slate is that slate can crack due to a variety of causes, which is very expensive to replace or repair. Another big advantage of MDF over slate is the drastic weight difference, which is a really important consideration to undertake in respect of installation. If the pool table will sit on the ground floor and rarely be moved, slate should be fine. However, if the table might need to be moved occasionally and/or be installed upstairs, MDF will often be better due to how much lighter it is. 

Think About How Often the Table Will Be Used

Buyer's remorse is something that we all want to avoid, and whilst pool tables will provide endless hours of enjoyment and retain value over a long period if well maintained, it is still a large investment. If the table will be a central feature of a busy entertainment room, investing in a premium slate table makes sense.  For occasional social games, an MDF table will typically make more sense, due to the difference in cost and weight, offering the right balance between quality and cost.
