Why China Sheet Metal Fabrication Dominates Global Supply

Aug 29
5 min read

China has long dominated the global sheet metal fabrication market, mainly due to its competitive pricing and lower labor costs (as low as 60% lower). However, it also offers some of the best automation and material supply chains, ensuring minimal delays. Most China sheet metal fabrication factories are located in the Shenzhen-Dongguan region with access to a harbor and delivery.

On average, Chinese metal fabrication can produce precision parts that are up to 40 - 45% cheaper and have a shorter lead time. For comparison, a prototype sheet metal part can cost approximately $ 1,000 in China and around $ 1,500 elsewhere.

What is Sheet Metal Fabrication?

Sheet metal fabrication is a process that transforms flat metal sheets into fully functional parts. These sheets are usually 0.5-6 mm thick. Sheet metal fabrication further includes cutting, forming, and assembly processes.

The materials used in this process are called mild steel, copper alloys, stainless steel, and aluminum.

The components produced as a result of this process all have a high strength-to-weight ratio and uniform wall thickness. These components are mostly used for custom sheet metal fabrication in enclosure and structural applications.

Why Choose China Sheet Metal Fabrication?

It is the home of Chinese metal fabrication because it dominates sheet metal production in the global market. This is because China has the infrastructure and integrated supply chains that can produce a high-volume output with in-tune tolerances.

Some benefits of this include:

  • Production costs in China are approximately 20–40% lower compared to those in countries such as Europe or North America. This is because China uses raw materials from local sources and has an efficient workforce.

  • China also has access to advanced CNC equipment, which includes automated press brakes and fiber lasers. This allows for tolerances of ±0.1 mm or better.

  • China can also conduct rapid scaling from prototypes to high production. For example, it can move from 1–100 units in 3–7 days to thousands of units per week.

  • Additionally, China has also established material ecosystems for aluminum of about the 5xxx/6xxx series. Along with aluminum, it has also established ecosystems for stainless steel grades 304/316 and galvanized steel, offering short lead times.

  • China also boasts an excellent logistics network, which reduces freight times and delivery costs globally.

These factors enable a reliable supply during projects that require tight tolerances and complex geometries. Also, they don't compromise on delivery schedules.

Key Processes in Precision Sheet Metal Fabrication

Some key processes in precision sheet metal fabrication include controlled processes like cutting, forming, and bending, joining, and finishing. This is because these processes help in achieving tolerances of ±0.05–0.2 mm. However, this depends on the material and its thickness.

Cutting

Cutting is of three types, which include:

  • Laser cutting: Fiber lasers having a power of 6–20 kW are used to cut aluminum and stainless steel of up to 25 mm thickness and with kerf widths of 0.1-0.3 mm. Kerf width refers to the amount of material removed by a cutting tool in a single pass. As a result, there is no heat-affected zone distortion in thin gauges.

  • CNC punching: CNC punching involves using a turret press with 30-60 tools that can produce holes and contours on sheets up to 6mm thick at rates of 500 hits per minute or greater.

  • Waterjet cutting: This process is used for heat-sensitive alloys or thick plates of up to >25 mm. It helps in maintaining ±0.1 mm accuracy without thermal alteration.

As a result, these processes help in cutting the material into small bits for the next step.

Forming and Bending

After cutting, you will form and bend the small bits. You can do this by using two methods.

  • CNC press brakes of about 100–400 tons with segmented tooling, which involves punches and dies composed of multiple, smaller and interchangeable pieces instead of one big tool. Additionally, it also uses automatic crowning systems to ensure bend angle accuracy of ±0.5° and consistent flange length.

  • The second method is roll forming, which creates continuous profiles for structural sections.

When the bits are prepared using these methods, you will join them.

Joining

There are 3 ways in which you can join the bits together.

  • Firstly, you can use TIG/MIG welding for stainless steel and aluminum. This allows for complete penetration with negligible distortion.

  • Secondly, you can use PEM hardware insertion and riveting for permanent fastener integration.

  • Thirdly, you can also use spot welding and laser welding for high-speed assembly of thin-gauge enclosures.

After this, you can finish your project in the next step.

Finishing

To complete your Finishing includes two processes:

  • Powder coating: Powder coating has a thickness of 60–120 μm and anodizing of Type II/III, which helps to give the material good corrosion resistance and aesthetic control.

  • Deburring and graining: Secondly, you can use deburring and graining to eliminate sharp edges and ensure a uniform surface finish of about Ra 0.8–3.2 μm.

This concludes the entire process of precision China sheet metal fabrication.

Sheet Metal Fabrication Industries Suitable for China

Chinese metal fabrication offers an advanced fabrication ecosystem. This ecosystem excels in sectors requiring high-volume precision and material versatility.

Automotive

IATF 16949-certified suppliers deliver ±0.1 mm tolerances at the rate of 100,000+ units monthly. Components such as battery enclosures for EVs, heat shields, chassis brackets, and body panels benefit from this standard because it has been set for maintaining high quality.

Electronics and Telecommunications

In electronics, thin-gauge stainless steel and aluminum are used along with EMI coatings and inserted hardware for the production of components like antenna housings, shielding, and server racks.

Aerospace

Aerospace suppliers may use AS9100 for quality management, while AS9102 defines requirements for performing and documenting first article inspection. Material traceability and inspection documentation should be confirmed according to project and customer requirements.

Medical Devices

ISO 13485 specifies quality management system requirements for organizations involved in medical-device design and manufacturing. Material selection and biological safety must be evaluated separately according to the intended application and applicable requirements.

Stainless steel 316L enclosures, instrument trays, and cart frames are created using this standard.

Construction and HVAC

Here, roll forming and large-format laser cutting help in creating galvanized steel ductwork, architectural panels, and structural supports.

So, these industries together produce a dynamic ecosystem that boosts China’s appeal in global markets.

Top Sheet Metal Fabricators in China

Three sheet metal fabricators are among the top ones in China, which include:

This is a Shenzhen-based manufacturer that is in demand because it has specialised in CNC bending, welding, and laser cutting. It offers a 1-3 day prototype lead time and ISO 9001 certification.

This certification shows that the aluminum content is high, along with stainless steel enclosures for medical applications and electronics.

RapidDirect

This fabricator provides online sheet metal fabrication services, which include fibre laser cutting, automated bending, and an instant quoting platform.

ISO 9001:2015 standard is certified with facilities in Shenzhen, where it excels in rapid prototyping and production of a normal amount for global clients.

MadeAria

Dongguan-located fabricator focuses on custom sheet metal fabrication for enclosures and brackets. The capabilities of maderaria include TIG welding and power coating.

It serves a variety of components, including electronics, telecommunications, automotive, and powder coating. All of these have short lead times and are priced competitively.

Conclusion

China offers advanced tooling and experienced companies for sheet metal fabrication. One reason most China sheet metal fabrication projects start in China is the competitive cost. But online sheet metal fabrication providers like Proleantech also have global standard compliance and a reliable delivery network for global shipping.
