Christian James Madsen is an American film and television actor known for his work in both independent cinema and mainstream productions. Christian is truly a filmmaker and author at heart, also producing, writing and directing projects of passion, with the goal to tell stories that resonate, through all mediums.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, he grew up immersed in the entertainment industry as the son of legendary actor Michael Madsen and the nephew of Oscar nominated actress Virginia Madsen. He is also heavily influenced by time spent in Montana where they have a treasured family home, as well as his Italian roots.

Up Next: He has a soon-to-be-announced supporting role in a much anticipated and deeply impactful WWII Holocaust film directed by Danny A. Abeckaser titled “Ashes To Iron” set to shoot in Budapest, Hungary, later this Spring, and has a short he wrote, directed and starred in called “Free Bird” being presented during the 2026 Cannes Film Festival at the French Riviera Shorts Film Festival, where he also is receiving the One To Watch award.
As an ode to honor his Hollywood lineage, Madsen continues to forge a path to success taking on roles of all sizes to showcase his passion for acting and filmmaking, and to refine his craft to gain broader recognition. He began acting in the late 2000s, initially appearing in minor parts and independent film projects. Determined to establish his own identity, Madsen studied acting techniques including the Meisner method and trained at the Playhouse West acting school in Los Angeles. Madsen’s breakthrough came with his role in the 2014 dystopian film “Divergent,” alongside Miles Teller, Theo James, Kate Winslet and Zoe Kravitz which introduced him to a wider audience and marked a turning point in his career. Around the same time, he appeared in “Palo Alto,” a coming-of-age drama directed by Gia Coppola, further establishing his presence in the indie film scene, and later, the 2019 feature “Red Handed” produced by Nick Cassavetes and Micheal Biehn, directed by Frank Peluso, which he starred alongside his father Michael Madsen.
His career has largely included a series of parts in independent films, where he developed a reputation for taking on introspective and character-driven roles. He has also written and produced several short films such as “Free Bird” and “Dinner With Grandma” which both had successful festival runs, and also focuses his time on writing features that are currently in development.

He has continued to build his filmography with roles in projects such as King Jack and Mr. Church, demonstrating his range across different genres. In addition to film, Madsen has worked in television, including a recurring role in the BET series The Family Business.
Over time, he has developed a career defined by persistence and versatility, balancing independent projects with more commercial work. He is also an avid philanthropist, supporting
causes and organizations such as COSF (Children’s Oncology Support Fund), Cure Addiction Now and Race To Erase MS, among others.
Christian is also a self-published poet and is set to co-star in the upcoming film “Dismantling the Sun,” slated for release this year, as well as several shorts in progress.
With a background rooted in Hollywood but a career shaped by steady effort, Christian James Madsen continues to establish himself as a distinctive presence in contemporary acting and one to pay attention to for decades to come both as an actor, and as a writer, producer and director as he hones his voice and vision.
Madsen is based in Los Angeles where he was born and raised, but also embraces his Italian ancestry, often filming projects in Italy and supporting international film festivals across Europe, with a large focus on his Italian roots.
