Katie Cassidy - Dr. Kate Locke in Herbert West: Reanimator
Katie Cassidy is an American actress, director, and producer widely recognized as a staple of superhero television and a modern-day “scream queen.” Born into an entertainment family as the daughter of pop icon David Cassidy and as third generation Hollywood, she built a distinct acting career independent of her family’s musical legacy. Cassidy became a mainstay on popular television with memorable arcs in Supernatural, Gossip Girl, and the Melrose Place reboot, while also appearing in feature films like the action-thriller Taken and the romantic comedy Monte Carlo. Her most defining television role came when she was cast as Laurel Lance (Black Canary) on The CW’s hit series Arrow. For nearly a decade, she anchored the Arrowverse, portraying multiple alternate-universe variations of the superhero character across The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.
In recent years, Cassidy has shifted her focus toward complex dramatic lead roles, high-concept genre films, and creative leadership behind the camera.
Next up, Katie is set to star in the film adaptation of ReAnimator, alongside Joseph Morgan. Filming wrapped this August, with a 2027 release for the film in motion. Cassidy is continuing her prominent run in the horror genre by starring in Herbert West: Reanimator, a modern-day reimagining of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic sci-fi horror tale. She takes on the lead role of Dr. Kate Locke, the professional partner to the infamous, obsessively brilliant mad scientist Herbert West.
Director Michael Grossman is directing Herbert West: Reanimator, the feature film based on a contemporary script written by Jade Sandberg Wallace, produced by Woodlake Entertainment, helmed by Jeff Lewis.
Elevated sat down with Katie Cassidy for a behind the scenes interview on the set of Herbert West: Reanimator.
Tell us why this role excites you?
Katie Cassidy: I was excited to get back into the horror genre and this character was one I could really sink my teeth into.
Why did you want to take on the role of Kate?
Cassidy: I’m thrilled to take on the role of Dr. Kate Locke. She’s the new pathologist at Alton General. Her backstory is very intriguing and darker than one would expect. She is smart and fearless, willing to do whatever it takes to prove her work is greater than anything God can create.
Were you familiar with the story before the Producer approached you for Kate?
Cassidy: I was not initially. However, I did watch the original and was wildly entertained. Our approach to this version is more grounded, but with some “hats off” to the original film.
What was it like transforming to this part each day on set?
Cassidy: Not gonna lie, it was a rough schedule, but every second was worth it. We had an amazing crew and a wonderful group of people that were incredible to work with day in and day out. It really takes a village - and I’m grateful to have been involved in this project.
What are some characteristics of Kate you share?
Cassidy: I pay attention to detail, and I’m very observant, especially as actor.
Anything else exciting to share about filming?
Cassidy: This movie is character driven with a horror element to it that will really keep you on the edge of your seat. Also, there is a great cliff hanger at the end, so I think it’s safe to say this won’t be the last ;)
What was filming like in retrospective now that you are wrapped?
Cassidy: Not gonna lie, I’m having a little bit of “post-production depression”, I miss my Alton people! And thank you to our producers John Simmons, Jeff Lewis, Roger Lewis, and David Trottie for helping us make this movie! Also thank you to our director MICHAEL GROSSMAN and cinematographer MARVIN V. RUSH, they make an incredible team!
AND Now let’s get personal, and get to know you as an actor. What is your favorite genre of film?
Cassidy: Psychological thriller/Character driven dramas.
What actors have inspired you in your career?
Cassidy: Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman, and Katherine Hepburn.
What is your favorite horror movie?
Cassidy: The Shining and although it may not be straight horror True Romance.
You have been acting since a child, what drove you to become an actress and join the family business?
Cassidy: I didn’t really have a choice. I’m third generation to be working in the entertainment industry in Hollywood, so it’s in the gene pool!
Who is a director you dream to work with?
Cassidy: Quentin Tarantino, James Cameron and Christopher Nolan.
What is your favorite food - cuisine and food itself?
Cassidy: Japanese. I love my sushi! I just had amazing Omakase at Sushi by Bou.
Do you cook? What is your favorite food to cook? Dessert?
Cassidy: I love a good breakfast. I’m also more savory to sweet, so I’ll take a good cheese plate anyday!
OK, and now your Style - what is your go to outfit combo?
Cassidy: A tee shirt, jeans, paired with a Chanel hand bag, and a pair of Jimmy Choo’s.
Depends on where I’m going, but Casual Chic.
What is your Quote to live by - life quote?
Cassidy: “Happy to be here, easy to work with” that’s my slogan.
