Heart, Heritage & Hospitality at Mi Sueño Winery

There are wineries in Napa Valley built on legacy, and there are wineries built on grit. Mi Sueño Winery is both. Founded in 1997 by Rolando and Lorena Herrera, the family-owned winery has become one of Napa Valley’s most compelling success stories—an estate rooted in perseverance, heritage, and a deeply personal vision of hospitality. “Mi Sueño,” Spanish for “My Dream,” is more than a name; it is a reflection of Rolando Herrera’s extraordinary journey from immigrant dishwasher to acclaimed Napa Valley winemaker. Today, alongside their six children, the Herreras continue to build a winery that feels both elevated and profoundly human, producing wines that honor family, culture, and the agricultural spirit of Napa Valley.

Rolando Herrera’s path through Napa Valley reads like a modern wine-country legend. After immigrating from Mexico as a child, he began working as a dishwasher at Auberge du Soleil in 1982 before steadily earning opportunities in Napa’s cellar culture through determination and talent. Over the years, he worked alongside some of the region’s most respected names, including Warren Winiarski and Paul Hobbs, holding positions at Chateau Potelle, Vine Cliff, and eventually serving as Director of Winemaking for Paul Hobbs Winery & Consulting. That breadth of experience helped shape Rolando’s philosophy that “farming and making wine is not science, it’s experience,” a perspective that still guides Mi Sueño today. The winery’s wines reflect that hands-on sensibility: polished and expressive yet never overworked. Among the standout bottlings is the 2022 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Oak Knoll, Mt. Veeder, and Coombsville vineyards. Aromas of black cherry, coffee bean, cassis, and roasted almonds lead into a richly textured palate layered with forest fruit, dark chocolate, river rock minerality, and sweet oak. It is a wine that feels unmistakably Napa Valley while still carrying the warmth and personality that defines Mi Sueño.

Part of what makes Mi Sueño especially refreshing within Napa Valley’s luxury landscape is the breadth and accessibility of its portfolio. The Herrera family farms vineyards across Napa Valley and Sonoma County, producing everything from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wines are sourced from distinctive vineyard sites including Coombsville, Mt. Veeder, Russian River Valley, Oak Knoll, Los Carneros, and the Sonoma Coast, allowing the portfolio to showcase a remarkable diversity of terroir and style. Just as notable is the pricing. In a region increasingly dominated by triple-digit tasting fees and cult Cabernet pricing, Mi Sueño offers wines that feel luxurious yet attainable, with many bottles ranging from approximately $55 to $85. That balance of quality and accessibility has helped cultivate a loyal following among collectors and casual wine lovers alike.

The hospitality experience mirrors that same approachable sophistication. Located in Napa’s crusher district, Mi Sueño’s tasting room offers intimate experiences centered around wine, family, and food pairings rather than spectacle. The winery’s Dream Flight introduces guests to five wines spanning the core portfolio, from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, all paired with artisan chocolate truffles crafted locally. For those seeking a deeper dive, the Herrera Tasting explores the winery’s most limited-production bottlings, named after Rolando and Lorena’s children. The atmosphere remains polished yet relaxed, offering the kind of authentic hospitality that has become increasingly rare in Napa Valley.

Mi Sueño Winery succeeds because it never loses sight of its story. Beneath the elegant wines and refined tasting experiences is something more enduring: a family’s belief in hard work, resilience, and the possibility of building something meaningful together. In a region filled with luxury brands, Mi Sueño stands apart by making luxury feel personal.
