Legendary Leaders Are Tied to Major Programs

More Than Just Wins

College basketball for years has had coaches who ruled certain programs and stayed there for years and years. Names like Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Dean Smith (North Carolina), and Bob Knight (Indiana) were synonymous with one program.

Times have changed, and there is far more movement among college basketball coaches, but that doesn’t take away from the icons of the sport.

When college hoops is in-season and while getting ready for all the action, make sure to watch the show here.

What College Head Coach Has the Most Wins?

On the women’s side, and overall, Geno Auriemma leads the way with 1,250 victories. He is followed by former Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer with 1,216 wins.

With regard to men, among the all-time winningest college basketball coaches, Coach K leads the way with 1,202 victories over 47 seasons. Boeheim also coached 47 campaigns. He finished with 1,015 victories. The longtime Syracuse coach saw 101 wins vacated because of violations while he was in charge.

There is no controversy here because Krzyzewski wound up with far more than the 101 wins that Boeheim lost for Syracuse’s indiscretions.

The above-mentioned coaches are the only two who have crossed into the four-figure win total.

Next on the list is the colorful and controversial Bob Huggins, who spent time at multiple schools and has 935 victories. No one would be surprised if the former Kansas State, West Virginia and Cincinnati head man somehow winds up with another job and makes a run at 1,000.

Jim Calhoun was the men’s head coach counterpart to Auriemma at UConn. In a complete career that spanned 44 years, he won 920 games and lost 397, a winning percentage of .699.

The other two coaches with more than 900 victories are Roy Williams (903) and Bob Knight (902). Williams ran two major programs, Kansas and North Carolina. Knight created controversy and success at Indiana.

If there was a coach who was sterner and achieved more success while acting out in ways that still seem unfathomable, it was Knight. He was the perfect description of someone college basketball fans either loved or loathed. There was no in-between with Knight.

There are seven other coaches who have won more than 800 games. They will surely be joined in 2025-26 by John Calipari. The current Arkansas coach has 790 victories in 31 seasons. Another coach who will be in the 800-club at some point next season is Kansas’ Bill Self. He enters his 31st coaching campaign with 790 career victories.

Which Coach has Won the Most NCAA Basketball Titles?

The winningest college coach when it comes to men’s titles is the legendary John Wooden. He built and maintained an incredible dynasty at UCLA, capturing 10 championships. The Wooden era in Westwood saw the program spit out star after star. Names like Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), Bill Walton, Jamaal Wilkes, Curtis Rowe, and Sidney Wicks went on to star in the NBA.

Wooden was 620-147  (.808) at UCLA. The record boggles the mind when one realizes his Bruin teams from 1966-67 to 1974-75 lost a total of 12 games, seven coming in the last two seasons of his coaching career.

The Wizard of Westwood is by far the winningest coach in men’s basketball when it comes to coaches with the most NCAA basketball championships.

Behind him with five championships is Coach K. Then comes Adolph Rupp, a Kentucky legend, who won four NCAA basketball championships. Calhoun, Williams, and Knight all captured three championships.

As an aside, UConn’s Gino Auriemma has won 12 championships on the women’s side with his Huskies.

Behind Auriemma are Pat Summitt (8, Tennessee), Kim Mulkey (4, Baylor and LSU), VanDerver, and Dawn Staley (3 each).
