The 2027 BMW 7 Series — The Neue Klasse Flagship Has Arrived

BMW's flagship sedan just rewrote its own rulebook. The 2027 BMW 7 Series made its world premiere today — simultaneously at Auto China 2026 in Beijing and a special event at Grand Central Terminal in New York City — and what BMW is calling its most extensive model update ever is not an overstatement.
This is not a refresh. This is a statement.

A New Face for a New Era
The 2027 7 Series introduces BMW's Neue Klasse design language to its flagship sedan for the first time, creating what the brand calls a "monolithic" appearance — cleaner, more commanding, and unmistakably modern. The controversially oversized horizontal kidney grille of previous years is gone, replaced by a slimmer, more vertically oriented design that finally feels resolved.
New crystal headlights, redesigned taillights, and a BMW logo finished in matte bring a restraint and elegance that the previous generation occasionally struggled to project.
The result is a sedan that looks as expensive as it is — and in a segment that is quietly shrinking, that matters enormously. The Audi A8 is exiting the large luxury sedan segment this year, and the Lexus LS has ended production. That leaves the 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class as the true titans of the category, and BMW has arrived for that battle looking sharper than ever.
The Interior: A Genuine Revolution
If the exterior is an evolution, the interior is a complete reinvention. BMW has installed its next-generation Panoramic iDrive system — a 17.9-inch touchscreen borrowed directly from Neue Klasse EVs, paired with a 14.6-inch front passenger display that comes standard. The Panoramic Vision projection stretches across the entire base of the windshield from pillar to pillar, creating an ambient information display that feels genuinely futuristic without being gimmicky.

The optional BMW Theatre Screen — a fold-down rear entertainment display that has been a real conversation piece since its introduction — now handles Zoom calls and can function as an extended computer display. For the passenger who treats the back seat of a 7 Series as a mobile office, this is the kind of feature that justifies the investment.

Materials throughout remain exceptional — sumptuous leather, wood trim, and BMW's new "Veganza" sustainable upholstery elevate every surface. Heating, ventilation, and massage functions are standard across configurations. The options list, as always with the 7 Series, can transform this sedan from a luxury cruiser into something closer to a first-class cabin at 155 miles per hour.
Power — Something for Everyone
The 2027 lineup offers three distinct powertrains, each compelling in its own right. The entry point — the 740 and 740 xDrive — uses an all-new 3.0-liter inline-six producing 394 horsepower, a meaningful increase from the outgoing model. The 740 xDrive reaches 60 mph in under five seconds and carries a starting price of $104,350.

The fully electric i7 lineup is where the Neue Klasse technology makes its most significant impact. The i7 50 xDrive produces 449 horsepower and starts at $107,750. The i7 60 xDrive delivers 536 horsepower, over 350 miles of range, and reaches 60 mph in 4.6 seconds — all for $126,250. Both now feature NACS charging ports and support up to 250 kW charging, enabling a 10-to-80 percent charge in just 28 minutes. A 10-minute charge can add up to 146 miles of range — the kind of number that makes range anxiety a theoretical rather than practical concern.
A plug-in hybrid 750e xDrive — 483 combined horsepower, 4.6-second zero-to-60 — arrives in early 2027, followed by a V8-powered M Performance model that will likely carry the M760 designation and satisfy those who still want naturally aspirated thunder beneath a luxury hood.

Why It Matters
The 2027 BMW 7 Series matters not just as a flagship update but as a blueprint. BMW has confirmed that the Neue Klasse thinking introduced here will roll out across its entire lineup — every future BMW, from the 5 Series to whatever comes next, will carry DNA from what debuted today. The 7 Series is the prototype for the brand's next chapter.
Production begins at BMW's Dingolfing plant in July 2026. The i7 60 xDrive and the 740 range arrive in the United States shortly after. For those who want the plug-in hybrid or the V8, patience until early 2027 is required — but given what BMW has delivered here, the wait will be worthwhile.
In a category that is quietly becoming more exclusive by the year, the 2027 BMW 7 Series has arrived exactly on time.
