Some projects are special from the moment they begin. This was one of them. Paradise Theater’s client had lived in a home with an extraordinary theater, an immersive sanctuary that he and his wife enjoyed every single day. When life carried them out of state, he found himself in a new home with a theater that, while functional, fell far short of his expectations. The dissatisfaction was immediate and acute. This was not just about entertainment; it was about restoring a daily ritual. He called us, along with his AV integrator from his previous project, with a simple but uncompromising brief: “Build me the absolute best theater possible within the constraints of the existing structure.”

Listening First

Before a single sketch was drawn, we sat down with the client for a detailed discovery meeting.  Digging deep into his vision, preferences, and must-haves. This wasn’t just a list of technical requirements; it was a conversation about how he wanted to feel in the space, the types of films he loved, the aesthetic cues that spoke to him, and the ways he had used his previous theater.

Jason Combs, the AV integrator and project manager, became the linchpin: coordinating trades, managing timelines, and keeping communication flowing. The timeline was intense. The client didn’t want to live through a drawn-out construction process, and his move-in date was looming. That meant decisions had to be made quickly and accurately, without sacrificing quality.

Designing at Speed

The solution was a series of weekly Zoom meetings where we could walk him through our progress, share findings, and gather feedback in real time. Each stage of design was supported by detailed 3D renderings, allowing him to see exactly what we were proposing before committing. These visuals became invaluable, turning what could have been rushed guesswork into confident, informed choices.

Even with the pressure of time, the process remained collaborative. The client stayed engaged and decisive, which was critical. Every major choice from projection system to seating layout to fabric selection was grounded in his vision. We were there to interpret, refine, and execute, but the DNA of the theater was entirely his.

Deconstructing to Reimagine

To bring his vision to life, we stripped the room back to framing. That allowed us to address the real limitations of the space and build forward with purpose: robust sound isolation, precision acoustics, reference-grade audio and video systems, custom seating, and a striking interior design that reflected his personality.

Sarah Reed, Paradise Theater’s interior designer, described the creative collaboration:

“This theater was a thoughtful collaboration built around the client’s passion for sound, design, and performance. We worked to integrate his bold design vision with the engineered audio and acoustical elements—combining a star field ceiling, cove lighting, and moody materials with upholstery that nods to his love of racing. His confidence in each selection and commitment to detail made the process both smooth and inspiring.”

Engineering the Impossible

One major challenge was the projector. The room simply wasn’t long enough for the optimal projection system. The answer was bold: excavate outside the back wall, cut through the basement’s concrete foundation, and pour a dedicated projection enclosure into the earth. It was an ambitious move, but it was the only way to achieve the scale and image quality he expected.

Precision in Performance

Keshav Nelavai, our acoustic engineer, summed up the technical challenge:

“Designing for reference-level performance in such a confined space pushed every aspect of the engineering process. We developed a multi-layered acoustic system combining diffusion, porous materials, and membrane traps, and ran extensive bass modeling to achieve a linear low-frequency response. Even speaker coverage was a challenge—we evaluated waveguide options for each surround speaker to ensure consistency across all seats.”

A Personal Finish

We nicknamed it “Redline Cinema,” a nod to the client’s love of super cars. Like a finely tuned machine, every component was there for a reason, and every detail contributed to the whole.

From the first discovery call to the final calibration, the client’s clarity of vision and decisiveness under pressure were what made this theater possible. Our role was simply to help him cross the finish line and go beyond his expectations.

Redline Cinema isn’t just a room. It’s a testament to a client who knew exactly what he wanted and wasn’t afraid to pursue it—full throttle.
