THE ELEVATED WINE, SPIRITS & CUISINE GUIDE

The State of Whiskey in 2026

The whiskey category in 2026 is experiencing a moment of genuine maturity after a decade of extraordinary expansion. The bourbon boom that defined American whiskey through the 2010s has evolved into something more nuanced — a market where supply has begun to catch up with demand in certain categories, where age statement whiskeys that disappeared from shelves have cautiously returned, and where the secondary market has normalized from its pandemic-era extremes.

The result is a better environment for the whiskey enthusiast than we've seen in years. The artificial scarcity that drove secondary market premiums to absurd levels has eased in enough categories that collectors and connoisseurs can build genuinely impressive cellars at reasonable cost — if they know where to look.

American Bourbon — The Foundations

The great distilleries of Kentucky continue to produce expressions that represent the benchmark for the category. Buffalo Trace's Antique Collection — the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Annual Release, including George T. Stagg, William Larue Weller, and Thomas H. Handy Sazerac — remains the most coveted annual release in American whiskey, with Stagg in particular producing expressions of extraordinary complexity and power. The retail lottery system through which these bottles are allocated makes acquisition as much about patience and local retailer relationships as about willingness to pay.

The celebrity whiskey category has matured alongside the broader market. Matthew McConaughey's Longbranch — a Kentucky straight bourbon finished with Texas mesquite charcoal — continues to represent one of the more authentic celebrity spirits partnerships, with the product quality standing independently of the celebrity association. Dierks Bentley's ROW 94 Bourbon, with its Broken Branches expression, has similarly carved out a position based on genuine distilling craft rather than name recognition alone.

Japanese Whisky — The Benchmark Shifts

Japanese whisky's global ascension has been one of the category's defining stories of the past decade, and 2026 finds the market in an interesting position. The supply constraints that drove prices for aged Japanese expressions to extraordinary levels — the result of the category's popularity outrunning aged stock built before the boom — are beginning to ease as distilleries that dramatically expanded capacity in the mid-2010s bring that whisky to maturity.

Suntory's Yamazaki and Hibiki expressions remain the category benchmarks, with Yamazaki 18 and Hibiki 21 representing the finest regularly available Japanese whiskies at their respective age statements. The emergence of newer Japanese distilleries — Akkeshi, Chichibu, Mars — has added expressions of genuine distinction to a category that benefits from a diversity of house styles that the category's early dominance by two major producers didn't fully represent.

Scotch — The Eternal Standard

Single malt Scotch whisky's position as the reference point for the entire category remains unchallenged in 2026. The great distilleries of Speyside — Macallan, Glenfarclas, GlenDronach — continue to produce expressions of extraordinary complexity, with the secondary market for Macallan vintage expressions in particular remaining robust despite broader market normalization. The Islands category, led by Ardbeg, Lagavulin, and Laphroaig on Islay, continues to attract devoted enthusiasts for whom the category's distinctive peated character is irreplaceable.

The Elevated Approach to Building a Whiskey Collection

The most rewarding whiskey collections are built around personal taste rather than investment thesis. Buy what genuinely moves you — the expressions that deliver an experience you want to return to — and the collection will develop an authenticity that market-driven acquisition never achieves.
